Required Materials:
* Current map of Colorado
* Colored pencils, pens or markers

Fulfills CDE Model Standards:
Geography
1.1 Students know how to use maps, globes, and other geographic tools to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective.

1.3 Students know how to analyze the dynamic spatial organization of people, places, and environments.

5.1 Students know how human actions modify the physical environment.

Science

Social Studies
1.2 Students use chronology to organize historical events and people.

Time required: 1 ½ to 2 ½ hours

Lesson Purpose: Students will become familiar with the Geologic time periods as well as building materials generated in each time period. Additionally, they will plot current locations of the building materials on a Colorado map.

  1. Have students read the architectural descriptions for each of the eight sites on the virtual walking tour.
  2. As they read, they should note the type of stone used in each building. Click on the link to learn more about each variety of stone. They should also note where the stone is quarried and the geologic time period in which the stone originated.
  3. Referring to the "Geologic Time Chart" (found at the end of the Geology Glossary), read the descriptions for each time period.
  4. Using a current map of Colorado, plot the location of each quarry. Have students use a different color pen or marker for each different time period.
  5. Have students create a table of information. Each table should include: Stone name; location; Geologic time period and approximate dates; houses on the walking tour where the stone can be found.
